CONGRATULATIONS to Spirit Bikes RT who ran way with the CENTRRL Team and Individual Trophies in 2016. We’re proud that the prizes went to such an obviously strong squad.

Jake Hales & Russell Rowles of Spirit Bikes RT

Jake Hales, pictured left, says “To be honest the trophy wasn’t an objective for us, but it’s a nice addition to our collection and it’s been fun to compete in local races as well as the National Level Events we’ve travelled to.”

Russell Rowles, Team Principal added “It’s great to have some recognition of what we achieved last year. It was our best year yet, not just in terms of results but in terms of providing local riders with a programme of decent, hard racing and helping them see their potential. We’re expanding our programme in 2017 and we’ll be strengthening our links with Chicken Cyclekit branded as Spirit Tifosi. We won’t forget our roots though and we’ll be putting on a race as we did this year. It all begins at local level.

Beds Road Racing Team round 6

The warmest day of the year so far saw some hard laps of the Great Barford Circuit and a significant number of starters were dropped by lap three. Crooswinds were definitely a factor on the exposed main road section, and most attacks came on the tailwind section before the turn to the finish hill.

A significant break containing John Peters of CC Luton, Josh Beckett of High Wycombe and one of the Equipe Velo riders looked set to succeed, holding a gap from mid lap 3 onwards, but the bunch eventually reeled it in with 1 to go, which gave rise to a few long range efforts. Robert Abbey of Hemel Hempstead CC opened a gap for a couple of kms but the bunch was winding up for the finale and he was caught with around 4km to go.

With two corners left to go, Jack Steel-Jessop of CC Luton launched a massive attack and immediately opened a dangerous gap, but it seemed the bunch were too busy looking at each other. He never looked back and took a ballsy win ahead of Simon Cannings of Equipe Velo and Ruairi O’Driscoll, also of Equipe.

Jack’s win not only takes him straight to the top of the Junior Competition, it also puts Luton in a very strong second place in the team standings and with the Team MK Regional ‘A’ looming next weekend, there’s more ground to be gained on Spirit Racing.

Thanks to Jason and the Beds Road team for laying on a great race.

rankings updated after Thames Velo Races round 5

Many thanks to Tom Burnley and the Team at Thames Velo for their hard work on Sunday. Sadly the National B event had to be abandoned following an incident on the A329 near Little Milton, but despite numerous stories of falls, there apeared to be only one rider requiring hospital treatment.

The Regional B race stayed together pretty much for the duration, with a nervous bunch staying attentive to any moves and a relatively flat course reducing the possibilities for selection.

Although all about positioning in the run in, it was won decisively by James Chapman of Kenilworth Wheelers who, along with Jacob Tresham (Corley Cycles) had a clear gap in the final sprint over the crest of the hill. Jacob catapults Corley up the table with the League Rankings starting to swell around the 20-30 point mark whilst Gavin James adds to the CC Luton tally having taken 3rd place.
